Welcome to the Cairns Surf Life Saving Club – it’s great that you’d like to get involved in Surf Life Saving, the largest and most iconic voluntary workforce on the Australian coast.
These instructions are for NewMembers who have not been a member of a surf club or surf life saving organisation in the last two years.
Go to https://sls.com.au/join/
Underneath NO, click on JOIN
On the following Entity Selection page, select Surf Life Saving Club, then choose Surf Life Saving QLD in the first drop down box and type in Cairns in the Club/Organisation box. Fill out the remainder of this form with your basic information then click Continue.
You will then need to complete the full membership application form. This form includes personal information (email address, driver’s license number, clothing sizes etc), medical information, emergency contacts and background information.
Once your application has been submitted you will see a confirmation window which includes your unique tracking ID. You will be sent this information by email, along with a link which you can use to check on the progress of your application.
You need to create a Members Portal Account for each person joining. Cairns SLSC requires new members to sign up online using the SLSA Members Portal system. Once this is done, you can manage your own and your families membership in the future.
To get started, click here to create a Members Portal Account. Make sure you are on 'Create Account' and not 'Login'.
Enter the information as requested. This matches up to the data input when you joined the club, so make sure you enter the exact information.
Enter either mobile number or email address to receive an Activation Code.
Enter the Activation Code. This will then direct you to your members portal page.
Repeat this for each member of your family joining.
Once you have accessed the Portal click on the fourth tab 'LIFESAVING ONLINE' to see your membership information. Most of the membership functions required are found under this tab.
If you are joining as a family, once you all have a Portal account, you can create a family group under "My Family" which will make renewing in the future much simpler.
If you wish to join up another person or family member, click on the link at the bottom of the confirmation screen. You will be redirected back to the application form for the next person, with some information saved.
Note: When a junior member joins, they must have a parent join with them - This is for all junior age groups – Greencaps through to U14s. The parent member (associate) member fee is significantly reduced and will allow the member to obtain any awards apart from lifesaving awards. This also includes their membership to the Supporters Club
Club Membership fees for 2018 are as follows:
|Junior Member (Ages 5 – 13)||$100|
|Parent Member (Associate)||$50|
|Active Junior (did 25 patrol hours)||$80|
|Active Senior (did 25 patrol hours)||$80|
|Reserve Active (fulfilled patrol hours)||$80|
"The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia."
The Cairns Surf Lifesaving Club runs Bronze Medallion courses throughout the year
In order to obtain the Bronze Medallion you must be a financial member of the club, be 15 years of age or older and be able to swim 400m in a pool in under 9 minutes.
The Bronze Course takes between 6 to 8 weeks to complete and includes the ability to swim in both the pool and the surf, knowledge of rescue techniques, first aid, resuscitation, radios and general life saving methodology.
Once the course is completed, members are placed onto a patrol roster and are asked to perform voluntary patrols for the Club. New members will be asked to sign a declaration of commitment to the club, stating they will fulfil their obligation of 25 - 30 patrol hours over the season.
It is a SLSA/SLSQ requirement that club members complete the minimum patrol hours to be eligible to compete at surf life saving carnivals and Branch Championships.
Once a member has obtained their Bronze they must complete an annual skills maintenance (proficiency) exam each season to continue their patrol and competition activities.
The course is free to members of the Cairns Surf Lifesaving Club.
