Compete. Train. Achieve.

About Surf Sports at Cairns SLSC

Surf Sports are a proud tradition at Cairns SLSC. Our members compete in events ranging from beach sprints and flags to ocean swimming, board racing, ski racing, and pool rescue. Whether you’re looking to compete for the first time at a local carnival or represent the club at state and national championships, our coaching team and club culture will support your journey.

Competing in surf sports is also one of the best ways to develop and maintain the skills that make you an outstanding patrol member. The disciplines are directly connected to real lifesaving techniques — which is why we love them.

Beach Events

Beach sprints, beach flags, beach relay, and the 2km beach run. Fast, competitive, and accessible — perfect for new members getting their first taste of carnival competition.

    Surf Swimming

Surf race, rescue tube race, and belt race. Classic open-water swimming events that test your fitness, surf reading ability, and technique in real conditions.

      Board & Ski

Board race, board rescue, surf ski race, and double ski race. Paddle power meets strategy in some of surf sport’s most exciting disciplines.

        Ironman / Ironwoman

The ultimate multi-discipline challenge: swim, board, and ski in sequence. The Ironman and Ironwoman events are the pinnacle of individual surf sport competition.

          Pool Rescue

Pool rescue events test lifesaving skills in a controlled environment — ideal for newer members and a great pathway into competitive surf sports.

            Rescue & Resuscitation (R&R) / Champion Lifesaver

Traditional lifesaving-focused events combining rescue techniques, CPR, first aid, and theoretical knowledge. These events celebrate the core skills of the movement.

              Carnivals

Cairns SLSC members compete at local, state, and national carnivals throughout the season. Keep an eye on our Latest News and Carnival pages for upcoming events, team selection, and results.

              Training

Our surf sports training program runs throughout the season, with sessions covering all major disciplines. Training is open to all patrolling members and is a great way to improve your skills, connect with the club, and prepare for carnivals.
